Sioux Falls Toastmaster Advances to District Speech Contest

Two Toastmasters will compete on Oct. 25 in Toastmasters International’s District 78 annual fall speech contest, held in Missoula, Mont.

Eric Dehaan of Sioux Falls Toastmasters Club 210 will be representing Division F in the Humorous Speech competition where he will have five to seven minutes to present a speech that makes the audience laugh repeatedly.

Dehaan, a CPA for Woltman Van Kekerix & Stotz, PC, joined the club four years ago when he had difficulty speaking in front of a group at work.

“When I had to say my name, my mind would go bank,” said Dehaan, “now I’m much more confident.”

Dehaan won two lower level contests before winning the Division F contest qualifying him to compete in the District 78 annual fall speech contest.

The second participant is Leah Brink of East Side Club, a corporate Daktronics, Inc. club, in Brookings, S.D. She will compete in the Table Topics contest, where contestants are given a topic and have up to two minutes to complete a response.  They do not know the topic ahead of time.

Leah Brink also won two lower level contests before winning the Division F contest to claim the honor and distinction of being the division’s representatives in the upcoming contest.

District 78 comprises more than 95 corporate and community clubs in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and north western Minnesota.

Dana Lang of EFS Stagecoach Speakers, a corporate Wells Fargo club, in Sioux Falls won second place and Dave Jansa of Sioux Falls Club 210 won third place in the Humorous Speech contest.

Duane Duba of Mitchell Toastmasters club won second place in Table Topics contest.
