Sioux Falls Toastmaster wins district speech contest

Sioux Falls toastmaster Josh Willprecht wins district evaluation contest against six other division finalists from northwestern Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota Saturday, May 2. Willprecht won first place in the Club 210 contest, Area 63 contest, and Division F contest to gain the opportunity.

“Evaluation speeches are designed to teach the evaluator how to effectively communicate constructive criticism,” said Rachel Woodman, Sioux Falls  Club #210 public relations vice president. “Sioux Falls’ businesses have multiple generations working under one roof and honing the ability to communicate effectively becomes more and more critical. Evaluation practices in our club, and in these contests, challenge and recognize those who strongly communicate feedback in a way that motivates others to achieve.”

During regular club meetings evaluators are assigned to members giving a prepared speech. At the end of the meeting the evaluators take the stage and deliver an evaluation to better the other speaker, and themselves.

In the International Speech Contest, multiple contestants compete to be the best evaluator by evaluating one speech given live at the contest called a “Target Speech.”

“Five years ago, I joined Sioux Falls Club #210 as a networking opportunity,” said Josh Willprecht Sioux Falls Club #210 sargent at arms. “Toastmasters grew into a passion. However, I discovered, through passion, I have found purpose. My purpose is to use my love of helping others, skill as an effective leader and communicator and desire to improve to stir the passion in others.”

An inspirational speech contest will follow the evaluation contest.

The six divisions in District 78 contain more than 95 corporate and community clubs.
